This is not your typical kids martial arts programs! Other classes will have your children standing in lines, bowing, throwing punches and kicks in the air, and yelling “kee-ya” as if they were just smaller adults with less attention span. Many parents (and, sadly, instructors,) think this is what a martial arts class “ought” to look like; The Playground Gym respectfully disagrees.

Let’s face it: children like to play. They like it a lot. Inspired by a radically different approach to teaching children martial arts called Play as the Way, or PAW, our curriculum takes advantage of the natural instincts of children and allows them to work hard at playing–something they’ll want to do regardless of external rewards or consequences.

Look around at other programs and then come in to meet us. We’re confident that The Playground Gym is unparalleled in the Portland area for its offerings for kids. Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranked and SBGi Certified Coaches combine decades of coaching and training experience—including amateur and professional competition–in the martial arts with safety, creativity, respect, and a love of the arts. Your kids will have a blast training modern, functional martial arts while learning how their bodies move and why values like respect, politeness and doing what is right are important to their success.

Whether an absolute beginner or long-time practitioner your child can jump right in and have an unforgettable time. This is martial arts at its best, and at the end of the day you’ll be confident that your kids are gaining real, measurable skills, while leaving each class inspired, a little bit tired and with visible joy.

Times

Martial Arts I (4-7 y.o.): Tuesday and Thursday 4 – 4:55 pm.

Martial Arts II (7-12 y.o.): Tuesday and Thursday 5 – 5:55 pm.

Cost

$78/month for 2 classes a week. $58/month for 1 class a week. Add unlimited Open Plays for $15/month.

Class tuition includes access to one Open Play time a month.

*This class requires members to wear a gi, belt and occasionally a mouthpiece. These may be purchased at the gym, but families are welcome to source them from other locations.
